Apply to be an Editorial Intern

At 20.35 Africa, part of our mission in becoming a resource institution for African poetry involves training editorially minded creatives who will go on to champion African poetry in various capacities. This is why we run the annual editorial internship, to provide space for African writers to learn how a small literary organization operates.

The 20.35 Africa team is looking for two editorial interns to join our team. While the first internship is for social media personnel with knowledge of graphic design, we will prioritize applicants who are passionate about poetry or literature. The second intern will work with our managing editor, Precious Okpechi in handling the Conversations series and must be passionate about contemporary poetry.

As an editorial intern at 20.35 Africa, your work will not be limited to these areas as you will work with other members of the team and experience the entire scope of operation of our non-profit literary organization, including compiling, publicizing, and publication of our annual anthology and other programs. General administrative support will be shared among interns.

We strongly encourage young people who are in their final year of or have recently completed their undergraduate education to apply to the internship. We also strongly encourage females/women to apply to the internship. We, however, are eclectic with the selection process and will invite only the best qualified to the interview.

Qualification and Requirement (Social Media & Graphic Designer)

1. Hands-on experience creating content for artistic and literary audiences
2. Experience in creating ad campaigns, monitoring social media feeds, and interpreting analytics
3. Expectation to grow our followership across all our social media platforms
4. Capacity to create and grow new presence on other platforms where we may wish to have accounts in the future
5. Ability to work and deliver required results with minimal supervision
6. Reliable time management
7. Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Adobe (especially photoshop)
8. Graphic Portfolio and CV
9. Demo versions of a newsletter, book cover, and advertisement
10. A general track record of social media management and graphic design. We should be able to evaluate the record in terms of result.

Qualification and Requirement (Editorial Intern)

1. Demonstrated interest in contemporary African poetry
2. Basic proofreading and copy-editing skills
3. Editorial experience (poetry and prose equally required)
4. Experience with small project management and timeline maintenance
5. Excellent email, online and virtual communication skills
6. Basic word processing skill including but not limited to Microsoft Word and Google Docs
7. Ability to familiarize with a poet’s work and derive insightful questions about their work, craft, and commitments.

Please note that this is a volunteer internship role. While we are working towards being able to pay every member of our team in the near future, we can only offer remuneration in the form of internet costs. In any case, the internship is the process by which we hire editorial assistants on a paid position.
